Fort Wayne, Ind. – In addition to its regular health science degrees, such as nursing, medical imaging, medicine, Social work, health sciences and dental, this spring Indiana University Fort Wayne will introduce two new undergraduate programs.
Starting in the spring of 2020, students can begin taking required courses for the Bachelor of Science in Health Data Science and Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH) in Community Health. The programs, administered through the IU Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health, feature practical and interdisciplinary curriculum. In total, the Fairbanks School of Public Health has had over 100 graduates from these programs.
The Bachelor of Science in Health Data Science integrates biostatistics, computer science and informatics to prepare students for jobs locally, nationally and internationally. Heath data science is a burgeoning field that uses cutting-edge technologies to gain insights from big data. The appeals of this program are the skills learned, such as computing, simulation and “hacking” skills. Job postings for data scientists increased 14-fold between 2012 and 2016 according to a report by Burning Glass Technologies.
The BSPH in Community Health trains students to work with groups of people to make healthy communities a reality. Many groups of people face significant challenges to living healthy lives. When it comes to health, Allen County ranks 46th among the state’s 91 counties and Indiana ranks 41st among 50 states. Through the BSPH in Community Health, students gain knowledge, skills and hands-on experience that prepare them to tackle real-world problems to improve the health of Allen County and beyond.
